Decoding the Quest for Happiness: Linking Concern over Happiness without Pursuit to Negative Meta-Emotions and Reduced Well-being.

Abstract:

Previous research suggests that a heightened emphasis on happiness can paradoxically lead to decreased contentment. This study elucidate under which conditions and mechanisms this occurs, by differentiating between two previously conflated aspects of valuing happinessthe strength of the value itself aspiring to happiness versus the judgment about one's own happiness levels concern over happiness. A theoretical model was proposed wherein aspiring to happiness might prove relatively benign. Conversely, focusing on happiness as an objective could introduce negative meta-emotions that permeate positive experiences, thereby undermining well-being.

:

To test this hypothesis, longitudinal and cross-sectional studies were conducted between 2009 and 2020 using diverse samples across gers, ethnicities, ages, and geographic locations Ntotal = 1,815. Data was collected through various methods including journal articles, dly diary entries, and surveys.

Findings:

Firstly, in Studies 1a and 1b, two distinct individual differences emerged: the strength of valuing happiness aspiring to happiness versus the act of evaluating one's own happiness levels concern over happiness. Secondly, Study 2 revealed that concern about happiness but not aspiring to it was associated with lower well-being both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Lastly, in Study 3, this link between concern over happiness and reduced well-being was partially explned by an increased experience of negative meta-emotions during positive events.

:

Valuing happiness per se is not inherently detrimental; however, the practice of monitoring one's own happiness introduces a layer of negativity that can negatively impact overall well-being. This nuanced understanding of pursuit for happiness offers valuable insights into personal happiness and psychological flourishing strategies.
