22 May 2024

A collaborative spirit united nearly a hundred students, early-career professionals, and interdisciplinary experts in addressing critical women's health challenges during the recent two-day REDESIGN Women’s Health Hackathon. This event was organized by the Dyson School of Design Engineering and the Women's Health Network of Excellence with the goal of illuminating ger disparities in healthcare, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving, and driving innovation rooted in -centric design.

Established in 2023, the Imperial Women’s Health Network is an initiative that brings together researchers, clinicians, engineers, and business professionals across faculties dedicated to advancing women's health equity. Dr. Carinna Hockham, the network leader and Dyson School of Design Engineering's Collective Innovation Lab lead, emphasized the importance of creating healthcare solutions specifically designed for and by women.

The event kicked off with a powerful keynote from Sarah Graham, renowned health journalist and author of Rebel Bodies: A Guide to the Ger Health Gap Revolution, who shed light on the long-standing neglect of women's health issues in traditional medical practices. Graham underscored the necessity for multidisciplinary collaboration as essential to addressing these disparities.

A series of workshops provided participants with the tools needed to tackle challenges head-on, focusing areas like needs finding and problem framing led by Tahira Resalat, ideation techniques and no-code prototyping instructed by Jasper Jia, and business canvas development and pitching strategies guided by Linh Nguyen.

Participants then split into teams, each tasked with exploring innovative solutions to pressing issues in women's health. Ideas ranged from digital platforms that could empower patients with accurate information and resources to devices designed for monitoring and managing specific conditions.

The culmination of the event was a showcase where each team presented their concept, demonstrating the diverse range of ideas over the course of two days. The presentations highlighted not only technical innovations but also emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding in creating truly -centric solutions.

As attees and presenters alike left the hackathon, there was an undeniable sense of excitement about the potential impact that emerging technologies and collaborative thinking could have on advancing women's health care. It is clear that this hackathon set a new precedent for how interdisciplinary teams can tackle complex health issues with innovative approaches grounded in empathy and -centric design.
