Empowering Black Wellness: Honey Pot's Reclaiming Campaign at Howard University

The Reclming Wellness campgn by Honey Pot and Target, in its third year, made a significant impact at Howard University during Black History Month. This event was not just about gathering attees; it was a testament to community revival. Founded by Beatrice Dixon in 2014, Honey Pot has emerged as a beacon, pioneering innovative products and leading educational initiatives that redefine Black health as an integral part of self-care.

Honey Pot's core message of reclming wellness is deeply rooted in fostering inner connections - nurturing the mind, body, and soul through transformative practices. This movement's legacy traces back to the 1970s with Black-led organizations advocating for prioritizing health and well-being alongside liberation struggles. Consequently, self-care remns a fundamental pillar of community empowerment.

A full-day event produced by Beyond 8 kicked off with an intimate master class featuring Dixon and Melissa Butler, founder and CEO of The Lip Bar and Thread Beauty. These two entrepreneurial powerhouses, long-time fris, shared their transformative journeys to the helm of their brands with members of Howard’s Black Girl's House chapter and students from diverse fields who were eager to forge their own paths.

In this candid session, Dixon and Butler openly discussed the challenges of entrepreneurship: emphasizing the importance of rest for creative growth, navigating the hurdles of fundrsing, and dealing with inevitable rejections. They also highlighted the unique obstacles they faced as Black women entrepreneurs, from community perceptions to systemic barriers. However, their resilience shone through, and they expressed gratitude towards the support received.

Throughout the day, students had access to wellness groups and community partners, exploring Honey Pot’s six dimensions of wellness - mindfulness, balance, vessel health, nature, ritual, and community - through immersive activities. These included a mini library filled with recommed reads such as Black Joy: Stories of Resistance, Resilience, and Restoration by Ze Carrington and Cleo Wade's The Sunflower Rules the Garden: Essays on Joy.

In addition, a mini library was set up featuring books that emphasize joy and resilience, further enriching the experience. The program also offered workshops led by experts who provided insights into various aspects of self-care.

The highlight of the day came when President Joe Biden shared his personal fight agnst domestic violence during an exclusive discussion with Glamour readers. This powerful conversation resonated deeply with attees, showcasing how community events can serve as platforms for sharing impactful stories and inspiring change.

As the day concluded, attees left with a deeper understanding of self-care's significance in both individual well-being and collective progress. Honey Pot reaffirmed its commitment to promoting wholistic wellness within the Black community, highlighting the interconnectedness of personal wellness and community service. By caring for ourselves, we become better equipped and more effective agents of change.
