Supporting Men's Mental Health: A Guide for Women
By Alyssa Hunt - June 14, 2024
Mental health discourse has gned significant momentum over the years, emphasizing the importance of emotional well-being across gers. However, according to Statista data, men are notably less likely than women to receive mental health treatment and bear a suicide rate approximately three times higher than that for women.
Men confront unique barriers when it comes to mental health issues which can deter them from seeking professional help, resulting in untreated conditions that may worsen over time, Paola Vidauri, LMFT, Clinical Therapist II at Loma Linda University Behavioral Medical Center's Substance Abuse and Recovery Program explns. Women play a pivotal role in supporting men by mitigating the stigma around mental health and fostering an understanding environment.
The Unspoken Rules
The societal norms that shape men's emotional experiences begin early in life. Boys are often discouraged from displaying vulnerability with phrases like, Stop crying or Toughen up, when faced with emotional stress. These practices contribute to what Paola Vidauri calls the unspoken rules:
Emotionally expressing oneself is not masculine.
A man's worth is tied to his financial success as a provider of the family.
Men are expected to be self-reliant and indepent, avoiding reliance on others.
These norms discourage adolescent boys from acknowledging feelings like sadness, anger or grief, leading them to suppress emotions under pressure to conform to traditional masculinity stereotypes. When adults fl to validate young boys' emotional experiences, they inadvertently reinforce that it's acceptable not to express vulnerability; it is a societal expectation for men not to show their emotions.
Support Strategies
Women can provide support by:
Educating Themselves: Learning about mental health issues and avlable resources to address them.
Encouraging Open Communication: Creating an environment where men feel comfortable discussing their feelings without judgment.
Seeking Professional Help Together: Encouraging men to see a therapist or counselor, perhaps going with them for the first appointment if they are hesitant.
Tips for Men
Men can also take proactive steps toward managing and improving mental health:
Regular Exercise: Physical activity can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Sun Exposure: Boosting vitamin D levels through sun exposure helps regulate mood, ding in warding off depression.
Fostering In-person Connections: Mntning relationships with fris rather than relying solely on online connections to mntn a support network.
Joining Support Groups: Engaging with communities for issues such as depression or addiction when feeling isolated from personal networks.
Balanced Nutrition: Choosing whole foods supports both physical health and mental well-being.
Medical Checkups: Regular checkups can identify underlying deficiencies that could impact mental health.
