UN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME PARTNERS WITH GOVERNMENT OF ECUADOR AND THE LAVAZZA FOUNDATION FOR DEForestation-FREE COFFEE INITIATIVE

On the occasion of International Coffee Day, the United Nations Development Programme UNDP, Ecuador's government and Lavazza Foundation have joined forces to introduce deforestation-free coffee. This new partnership ms at enhancing sustnable agriculture practices, strengthening local communities in Ecuador and unlocking market opportunities for small-scale farmers while protecting vital forest ecosystems.

The Deforestation-Free Coffee certification guarantees consumers that no forest land has been cleared or degraded for the cultivation of coffee beans. The premium-grade produce is meticulously monitored through satellite imagery and third-party verification to ensure adherence to strict environmental standards, thereby preventing deforestation and supporting conservation efforts worldwide.

“This collaboration underscores our commitment towards a sustnable future,” sd Michelle Muschett, Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director at UNDP's Latin America and Caribbean division. The Ecuadorian coffee produced under this initiative not only demonstrates joint efforts agnst climate change and forest ecosystem preservation but also showcases innovative solutions for long-term economic benefits to local communities while ensuring environmental sustnability, she added.

Working in tandem with FAPECAFES, a federation representing over 1,800 Amazonian families, the project benefits more than 70,000 producers, including nearly half who are women. By improving infrastructure across 18 collection centers, this partnership significantly boosts local agricultural productivity and livelihoods.

We're proud to collaborate with UNDP on sustnable projects, sd Giuseppe Lavazza, Chrman of the Lavazza Group and member of the Lavazza Foundation's Board. This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustnability and responsible supply chns.

The Deputy Minister for Ecuador's Environment, Water Ecological Transition, Maria Cristina Recalde, emphasized the broader impact of this partnership: Ecuador is leading sustnable agriculture practices through our joint effort with UNDP and Lavazza Foundation. This not only safeguards our forests but also supports the income of Amazonian families by improving coffee production methods.

The launch of deforestation-free coffee follows the successful implementation of the PROAmazonia Program, a comprehensive initiative supported by Ecuador's Ministry of Environment Ecological Transition and Agriculture.
