In the constantly evolving terrn of global health, a fundamental truth emergesempowerment of women’s leadership is not just an option; it is indispensable. As we confront unprecedented challenges ranging from pandemics to health disparities, diverse and inclusive leadership becomes paramount.
Despite constituting over 90 of frontline health workers and contributing approximately 70 of the global health workforce, a notable imbalance persists in their representation at leadership levels within global health institutionsonly 25 hold top positions. This disparity is exacerbated on African soil where women bear a significant health burden owing to disparities in healthcare access, nutrition, and education.
The State of Women and Leadership in Global Health report highlights the urgent need to address this inequality. In Kenyaa country grappling with a high disease burdenthe situation becomes even more critical. Over half of deaths are attributed to infectious diseases and injuries, while around 39 result from non-communicable diseases. Projected future health statistics indicate an increasing share of deaths due to these conditions.
Moreover, the health workforce in Kenya faces several challenges, including a reduced budget allocation for healthcare services, as seen in the decrease from Ksh.146.8 billion to Ksh.141.2 billion for 2023-2024. This reduction comes amidst commitments made under the Abuja Declaration of 2001 med at increasing health sector funding.
Devolution of healthcare delivery has been commable, yet it presents its own set of challenges including clarifying roles between national and county governments in health services, political influence affecting timely remuneration, and low motivation among health workers.
